Codava council seeks land rights

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: The Codava National Council has demanded a Constitutional guarantee on the community’s Jamma-bane land tenure under Articles 370 and 371.

Speaking to presspersons here on Thursday, council secretary-general N.U. Nachappa said members had met Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and Governor T.N. Chaturvedi and put forward the demand for Central legislation to this effect. He cited instances where tribal people in the north-eastern States had been conferred rights over their lands by amending the Constitution.

Politicians criticised

Mr. Nachappa, who opposed the Government’s move to take away the rights of landowners in Kodagu over Jamma-bane land through two recent circulars issued by the Revenue Department, also criticised politicians from Kodagu and “self-styled leaders of the community” who have been opposing the circular.

He said their concern was driven by an interest in real estate deals and not the community’s welfare.

The council has demanded a total ban on alienation of Jamma-bane land to prohibit the traditional landholdings from being sold.
