Centre of attraction: Residents of Kannabiran Koil Street with a newborn girl baby found abandoned.
TAMBARAM: A newborn girl baby was found abandoned on Kannabiran Koil Street in Pallavaram, on Thursday.
Residents said they heard the cries of the infant and some of them noticed the infant wrapped up in a gunny sack. The infant was placed in the slush in the middle of a thorn fence, said Rajeswari (50), who claimed ownership of the baby.
As news about the incident spread, scores of residents in the locality came to her house. Many of her neighbours requested Rajeswari to hand over the girl baby, assuring they would look after her.
However, information reached personnel of Pallavaram police station, who promptly called 1098 – Child Helpline.
Volunteers came to the spot and the baby was handed over to them, with great reluctance. “I was the first to spot the baby and hence I am her guardian,” Rajeswari said. Police informed residents that they were acting as per rules and that such abandoned children should not be left in the care of residents who found them.
