RAMANATHAPURAM: A no-confidence motion moved by a section of councillors of Ramanathapuram Municipality against Chairperson R. Lalithakala was defeated on Thursday.
As directed by the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, the council meeting to decide the fate of the motion began at 3 p.m.
Councillors were allowed inside the municipal office after a thorough check. Ms. Lalithakala (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) and five others supporting her abstained from the meeting. H
owever, 17 councillors, including five belonging to the DMK and nine of the AIADMK, attended the meeting. M. Jeyakumar, ward 32 councillor, who was brought from the Madurai prison on a High Court direction, also participated in the meeting .
The entire proceedings were videographed and ballot papers were counted in the presence of councillors and officials.
The Regional Director of Municipal Administration, Chandrasekaran, who chaired the meeting, announced that all 17 councillors present at the meeting had voted in favour of the no-confidence motion.
However, it was declared as defeated for want of required numbers.
To win, the motion should have got the support of 20 out of 33 members.
