Vigil stepped up in Tamil Nadu

Special Correspondent

Hunt for accused

in sensational cases intensified

CHENNAI: Special units dealing with fundamentalists have stepped up vigil in the State and intensified the hunt for accused in sensational cases.

This follows allegations of involvement of Indians in the London-Glasgow terror incidents. It has nothing to do with Tamil Nadu specifically. A senior police officer said a close watch was being kept on new fundamentalist outfits. The police had been instructed to ensure that volunteers of banned organisations did not carry on their campaign by switching over to other outfits. Vigil was being maintained on the flow of funds to suspected organisations and on the visit of suspicious persons from abroad. Sensitive locations are under the scanner. What shocked the police was the revelation early last year that Mohammed Fayad, a Pakistani terrorist arrested in Mysore, had obtained a driving licence from the transport unit office at Tondiarpet in North Chennai, through a driving school. The Karnataka police took a person belonging to Chennai for questioning.
