“India should put more pressure on Australia”

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: “Every day I hear of some or the other new problem that my husband is facing in Australia. That is why I met the Minister to ask that the Indian Government put more pressure on the Australian Government,” Firdaus Arshiya, wife of Mohammed Haneef, the Indian doctor detained on charges of terrorism, told The Hindu after her meeting with Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahamed on Thursday night.

Assurance

Ms. Arshiya said she was assured that the Government was up to date with all the happenings in Australia and that they (the Government) were trying their best to secure justice for Dr. Haneef.

“We have been told that one of our relatives can go to Australia as soon as possible,” she said. On how the family was coping with the distressing situation, Ms. Arshiya said, “We never thought something like this would happen to us. Terrorism was such a far away thing for all of us.”

Iqbal Ahmed, Ms. Arshiya’s uncle, who accompanied her to the meeting, said, “We have always been against terror and want justice for our family.”
