Prominent players for ITF Futures tennis tournament

CHENNAI: Prominent players from USA, France, Brazil, Japan, Pakistan, Taipei and host India will participate in the GNC-Dr. KCG Verghese ITF Futures tennis tournament at the Gandhinagar Club from July 23 to 28.

The $10,000 event will be sponsored by the Hindustan Group of Institutions, with Indian Overseas Bank being the co-sponsor. “There will be 20 direct entries for the main draw and eight qualifiers. Four wildcards will be announced prior to the tournament,” said Kannan Adityan, Tournament Director, at a press conference.

Pakistan’s Aqueel Khan has been given the top billing. Vijay Kannan, Aditya Madkekar, Vivek Shokeen, Ashutosh Singh, Vishnu Vardhan, Ravi Shankar Pathanjali, Jeevan Nedunchezhian and Tushar Liberhan would be some of the Indians in the fray. The draw size will be 32 for singles, and 16 for doubles. The singles and the doubles winners will earn 12 ATP points, with the singles winner receiving Rs. 52,000.

The qualifying rounds will take place on July 21 and 22.

Maharishi Vidya Mandir ‘A’ posts win

B. Siddharth’s unbeaten 74 helped Maharishi Vidya Mandir ‘A’ beat Chinmaya Vidyalaya by 74 runs in the TNCA city schools under-17 C. Ramaswamy Trophy cricket tournament held here.

The scores: Maharishi Vidya Mandir ‘A’ 153 for four in 22 overs (B. Siddharth 74 n.o.) bt Chinmaya Vidyalaya 79 in 22 overs (P. Nihal three for 13); GSS Jain Vidyalaya 50 in 17.3 overs (S. Omesh three for 4) lost to Sri San kara Vidyalaya 54 for two in 10.2 overs.

Easy win for Vidya Mandir ‘A’

Vidya Mandir ‘A’ crushed Bala Vidya Mandir by 144 runs in a TNCA city schools under-15 B. Somasundaram Trophy cricket match here.

The scores: Vidya Mandir ‘A’ 216 for four in 30 overs (C. Avinash 46, Aashish 36) bt Bala Vidya Mandir 72 in 26.3 overs: DAV (Mogappair) 164 for five in 30 overs (Raj Kiran 40, P. Aravind 32, P. Sanjay 54, B. Varun Kumar th ree for 35) bt Maharishi Vidya Mandir 112 for seven in 30 overs.

Don Bosco triumphs

Don Bosco HSS (Perambur) defeated Kadambathur HSS in the final of the inter-school boys’ volleyball tournament, conducted by Jaigopal Garodia Vivekananda Vidyalaya at its school premises in Chennai recently. Thirty eight teams took part in the tournament.

Karthik scalps five

A. Karthik’s five for 13 enabled Santhome beat Chettinad Vidyashram by 138 runs in the semifinals of the St. Bede’s Centenary Sumeru Soft Trophy under-15 cricket tournament held here on Wednesday.

The scores (semifinals): Modern SSS 81 in 34.3 overs (Jitinder three for 21, Gaurav Sharma four for 5) lost to St. Bede’s AIHSS 82 for five in 32 overs (Leonard Bruno 41).

Santhome HSS 199 for nine in 50 overs (V. Ganga Sridhar 45, V. Jai Ganesh 30, M. Siddarth 26 n.o., Kunal Madhan five for 38) bt Chettinad Vidyashram 61 in 25.3 overs (A. R. Anand three for 15, A. Karthik five for 13).

Zaid posts win

Zaid Khan (TNBSA) overcame Mueen (MBC) 79-71, 47-56, 50-25, 53-44 in a round-robin league match of the TNBSA Progressive snooker meet-III being held here.

Inter-school tournaments

St. Joseph’s College of Engineering (SJCE) will conduct a State-level inter-school (boys and girls) tournament from July 20 to 23 at the college premises. The disciplines are ball badminton, basketball, volleyball, kabaddi, athletics and football (only for boys). Students of Std. X, XI and XII are eligible to take part.

Around 6,000 players from 150 schools across Tamil Nadu are expected to take part. The prize money for the tournament is Rs. 3 lakh.

Apart from this, SJCE will conduct and sponsor the first National wheelchair fencing championship on July 25 and 26 and an all-India invitation ball badminton tournament for men from August 3 to 5 at its college premises.
