GPS mapping of Perambalur schools soon

PERAMBALUR: All 1,105 schools in Perambalur district would be mapped through global positioning system (GPS) within a fortnight. The map will reveal their location in towns, firkas, villages or hamlets and the population they cater to.

The mapping will help planners to determine the need for new schools after assessment of educational facilities in a taluk or village and the distance between two nearest schools. The administration can also access data on SC/ST population and facilities like sanitation and drinking water.

The mapping is being carried out by 20 block resource teacher educators (BRTEs) who recently underwent training in the use and application of user-friendly geographic information system for mapping. The BRTEs have been given a two-wheeler and a GPS equipment each for conducting the survey.

The training was imparted by A. Sundaram of the Department of Futures Studies at Madurai Kamaraj University and S. Vasudevan of the Department of Geology at Bharathidasan University.

The programme is being executed all over the State on an outlay of Rs 1.03 crore, sanctioned under the ‘School Mapping Project’ of the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development
