APSACS embraces Gandhigiri

P. Sujatha Varma

VIJAYAWADA: The Andhra Pradesh State AIDS Control Society (APSACS) seems to have an amazing sense of optimism. After its failed attempt to elicit voluntary services of private doctors for treating HIV +ve patients through the ‘Be Bold’ campaign, the society now is encouraging members of the network of positive people to adopt Gandhigiri.

“We have asked HIV +ve people to form into groups, meet the doctors and strike an emotional chord with them. Regardless of their cold response, we want the patients to approach the doctors with roses in their hands,” says APSACS project director G. Ashok Kumar.

“The idea is to break the ice and make the doctors’ fraternity realise their responsibility”, says Mr. Ashok Kumar, adding that some of the HIV +ve persons are willing to go a step further and give the doctors a big hug if required.

As part of its ‘Be Bold’ campaign, the society launched a ‘Bold Doctors’ Club’ and invited private doctors from across the State to shun discrimination against HIV +ve patients by becoming members of the club. “Be bold and treat the HIV +ves,” it urged. It also plans to honour the doctors serving the virus-afflicted patients at a State-level function being planned on August 15.
