Centre keen on skill development

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Secretary of the Central Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Chandrapal has said that the Government is laying considerable emphasis on skill development as part of its initiatives to promote self-employment programmes across the country.

Inaugurating a workshop on employment generation here on Friday, Dr. Chandrapal said the target was to enhance the skill development level from the present five per cent to 50 per cent during the coming Five-Year Plan period.

Emphasising that the MSME sector will continue to play a vital role in resolving the unemployment problem in the country, Dr. Chandrapal said the educated youth would be able to take advantage of the self-employment opportunities in the MSME sector only if massive initiatives were launched for developing their skill levels.

He said the cluster approach where the MSME units engaged in production-related activities in a particular sector set up a common facility centre for raw material sourcing, processing, and marketing, had been found to be an effective strategy for economic viability in this area.

Principal Secretary of the Kerala Industries Department T Balakrishnan, Chairman and Managing Director of the National Small Industries Corporation (NSIC) H.P. Kumar, general manager of Canara Bank P Mohanan, Deputy General Manager of the Reserve Bank of India R.N. Panigrahi, Chief Executive Officer of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission K.K. Gupta, Secretary of the Coir Board Kumara Raja spoke.
