Medical and health expo begins at AMC

Decades-old specimens of various departments on display

VISAKHAPATNAM: Arogya Utsav, the sixth medical and health exhibition of Andhra Medical College, commenced here on Friday. Commissioner of Police N. Sambasiva Rao inaugurated the exhibition and appreciated AMC for organising the event which was informative to the people.

The exhibition would provide an opportunity for visitors to witness some rare specimens collected by various departments of the 85-year-old college, some of them a few decades ago.

Birth of quadruplets and triplets was a rare occurrence and specimens of the same could be seen in the anatomy and pathology departments.

There were many other rare specimens on display in different blocks of the exhibition. Enthusiastic medicos were explaining the exhibits to the visitors.

There were many charts and other material on display to explain to the people about constitution of human body and the way it would function, the ill effects of smoking and other habits, about cancer and other diseases.

Blood tests, bone strength and other examinations were being done at a very low cost. A replica of an operation theatre was created to let the people know how it would look like and what equipment and gadgets would be used for surgery. A film showing a surgery in process was also being screened.

There was a lot of information on HIV and AIDS in the Microbiology Department and a model of HIV virus.

The students also prepared models of many other viruses.

The exhibition commences with the stall of the Paediatrics Department in the Physiology building (block A).

Block B (the anatomy building) has anatomy, social and preventive medicine and forensic science wings and this block should be more interesting and which might also frighten the weak hearted people as dissected bodies of a male and female, many specimens of body parts in the anatomy wing and also a recreation of a hanging by a woman in the forensic wing to explain how death is determined as a suicide or murder.

Also in this block were the unique skeletons made of ivory and rosewood.

The anatomy wing also has some entertainment stalls like Talking Skull, Melting Man, etc.

Principal of AMC C.V. Rao, Superintendent of KGH T. Raviraju, vice-principals E. Peda Veerraju and T.S. Prasad, paediatric surgeon Shyam Prasad and others were also present on the occasion .
