Structural audit must

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra Government will soon promulgate an ordinance to make structural audit compulsory for all buildings in Mumbai, which are older than 10 years, every five years.

Legislation is also coming to introduce registration (licensing) of builders to check building crashes, Minister of State for Urban Development Rajesh Tope said on Friday.

He was replying to debate in the Assembly on Wednesday’s building collapse at Borivli, in which 28 persons were killed. Owners of all buildings would be required to obtain structural stability certificates. Laws would be amended for this purpose. Development control rules would be changed to make pile foundation mandatory and to ensure that soil testing conforms to ISI norms.
