KADAPA: Harassment of freshers in colleges in the guise of ragging is an offence under law, Permanent Lok Adalat chairman Mohan Gandhi said on Saturday. punishable Students resorting to ragging would face punitive action as per law, he cautioned at a legal literacy camp in Government Arts College here. Ragging bordering harassment would affect students and their parents, therefore students should keep this in mind, he said. A.P. Ragging (Prevention) Act 1977 stipulated stern action depending on the scale of ragging, District Legal Services Authority secretary B. Syamsunder said. In tune with A.P. High Court direction, awareness was being created among students, by organising such camps, he said. Insulting or provocating a student by ragging would make the accused liable of six months imprisonment or fine of Rs.1,000 or both, Fourth Additional District Judge J.V.V. Satyanarayana Murthy said.
