GADAG: District in-charge Minister B. Sriramulu has directed the officials to complete drought relief works at the earliest and submit utilisation certificates to the Deputy Commissioner. Chairing a meeting to review drought and flood relief works in the district, Mr. Sriramulu said since unutilised funds had to be returned to the Deputy Commissioner, the officials should take steps to complete the works at the earliest. Earlier, the officials said that of the 631 works sanctioned, 582 had been completed. Work on 26 projects was in progress and work on 23 projects was yet to commence because of various reasons. A sum of Rs. 6.67 crore had been spent on drought relief works, they added. Deputy Commissioner Mohammed Mohsin said that a proposal seeking Rs. 4.50 crore had been submitted to the State Government to repair roads and public buildings and to provide compensation to owners of private buildings damaged in heavy rain. Officials of the Agriculture Department said that sowing was in full swing in the district and 70 per cent of sowing of groundnut and jowar had been completed. They said 90 per cent of sowing of green gram had been completed in the district. The Minister chaired another meeting on Friday on the installation of a statue of Basavanna in Gadag. The Deputy Commissioner said that the project would cost nearly Rs. 30 lakh. The Tontada Siddhaling Swamy Math had contributed Rs. 10 lakh towards it, he added. Mr. Sriramulu promised to mobilise funds and seek assistance from MPs and legislators.
