Governor’s stand hailed

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Forum of Zilla Panchayat Presidents and Vice-Presidents has welcomed Governor T.N. Chaturvedi’s decision to return to the legislature the Karnataka Panchayat Raj (Amendment) Bill, 2007.

“This is the result of our fight for safeguarding the interests of panchayat raj institutions,” Damodar N. Naik Gardikar, president of the forum, said on Friday.

Mr. Gardikar, who is the president of the Uttara Kannada Zilla Panchayat, chaired a meeting of all the 27 zilla panchayat presidents and vice-presidents here on Friday to discuss the proposed Bill.

Mr. Gardikar told presspersons that the Governor’s observations were consonant with the image of the State being the pioneer in the decentralisation of power through panchayati raj.

He said the forum would take a delegation to New Delhi and apprise the Union Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department about the State Government’s move.
