Turning the heat on Government: BJP activists led by the party’s Delhi chief Harsh Vardhan staging a demonstration in New Delhi on Saturday.

NEW DELHI: A large number of Bharatiya Janata Party activists led by the party’s Delhi unit president Harsh Vardhan took out a rally on Saturday from Ferozeshah Kotla to the residence of Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit demanding “an enquiry into the power privatisation scam” and to protest against the Government’s inability to rein in the killer Blueline buses. The marchers broke through two barricades before courting arrest.

Addressing the protesters at the Ferozeshah Kotla grounds, Dr. Vardhan said Ms. Dikshit should call a special session of the Assembly to apprise it of the action taken on the report on power privatisation by the Public Accounts Committee headed by MLA S. C. Vats. He said the party would take the issue to every corner of the city through demonstrations if the demand was not met.

The Delhi BJP president wondered why the Capital’s citizens had not benefited from power privatisation in all these years and how come the killer Blueline buses were still plying despite Ms. Dikshit being in power for well over eight years.

He charged that the Government had been hand-in-glove with the private players in the power and transport sectors and this was the reason why the residents were suffering.

BJP national secretary Vijay Goel charged that while Ms. Dikshit went on insisting that people had benefited from power privatisation, she should tell why many people were still not being supplied power in the city.

Also, he demanded to know why power tariff had been increasing at small intervals and the power companies had not been made more accountable.

The Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, Jagdish Mukhi, said despite repeated demands by him in the House, the Chief Minister had not announced an enquiry into the power privatisation scam.
