Hard Times: Couples engaged in cultivation in a field in Kuttanad in Alappuzha. Though blessed with rivers and navigable canals, Upper Kuttanad has around 10,000 acres of paddy field of which only 3,500 acres is used for cultivation of single crop during December-March and the rest 6,500 acres is left fallow due to non-availability of water and labourers.
