Jubilation in Pratibha’s native village
NADGAON (Maharashtra): In this nondescript village in Jalgaon district of north Maharashtra, Diwali has arrived four months in advance.
As it became evident that Pratibha Patil, who hails from here, is becoming India’s first woman President, after counting in the elections got under way, the village erupted in joy and celebration.
Welcome march
Firecrackers were burst and sweets distributed in the village, about 50 km from Jalgaon, as the trends confirmed that “their beti” (daughter) would soon be ensconced in the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Villagers donned the traditional attire and organised a welcome march to celebrate Ms. Patil’s victory.
“Moment of pride”
“This is a moment of pride not only for us but for the entire State,” a villager told a visiting PTI correspondent, as celebrations continued into the night. — PTI
