Srinagar: In the second such attack on Amarnath pilgrims in a week, militants hurled a grenade at pilgrims who gathered to have lunch at Pahalgam on Saturday on way to the cave shrine. Fifteen people were injured. The grenade was lobbed into a community kitchen inside a gurdwara near the police station at 1 pm, official sources said. Eight sadhus were among the injured. Panic gripped the hill resort and people, including tourists, started running for cover soon after the grenade attack. The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital and nine of them were discharged after first aid. The others were referred to Srinagar for specialised treatment. Police assisted by paramilitary forces immediately cordoned off the area and a massive hunt has been launched to nab the militants involved in the attack, sources said. No militant outfit has so far claimed responsibility for the attack. The attacks took place despite the Hizbul Mujahideen’s recent assurance to the pilgrims that they considered such attacks against the teachings of Islam and did not believe in hurting innocent persons. This was the second attack on pilgrims in the valley since the Amarnath yatra began on July 1. — PTI
