ALBI (France): Alexandre Vinokourov won Saturday’s Tour de France time trial, while Michael Rasmussen of Denmark retained the overall lead.

The Kazakh rider clocked 1 hour, 6 minutes, 35 seconds for the 54-kilometer (33.6-mile) 13th stage in and around Albi as he bids to return to the title chase. Vinokourov, who has felt pain in both knees since crashing in the fifth stage, was 1:14 in front of second-placed Cadel Evans of Australia. Andreas Kloeden of Germany took third, 1:39 back.

“I gave everything. I’m happy with my performance,” said Vinokourov, who came into the stage trailing Rasmussen by 8:05.

The roads were slick from rain. Several riders crashed, including Vinokourov’s Astana team-mates, Kloeden and Andrey Kashechkin, who both crossed the finish line with grazes on their hips. Rasmussen, not known to be strong in time trials, defended his yellow jersey. He even overtook Valverde. — AP
