56 killed in Pakistan floods
KARACHI: At least 56 people were killed and scores of others wounded in flash floods in Pakistan’s North-West Frontier Province, officials said on Saturday.
The floods and mudslides destroyed houses in two villages on Friday night in the remote tribal area in Dirbala district, some 250 km north of Peshawar.
“We have so far recovered 56 bodies and believe there are more to be found,” a district official said.
Local media reports put the toll at 100. District Mayor Sardar Tariqullah said the floods and lightning caught the villagers unawares, and rescue operations had been difficult because the villages were in remote areas. — PTI
