Congratulates Pratibha on victory Thanks Kalam for cooperation, guidance
B.S. Shekhawat
NEW DELHI: Bhairon Singh Shekhawat tendered his resignation from the post of Vice-President on Saturday, soon after his defeat in the Presidential election. Discarding his official car, Mr. Shekhawat drove in his personal car to the Rashtrapati Bhavan and submitted his resignation to President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. “I am extremely grateful to you for the cooperation and guidance I have always received from you,” Mr. Shekhawat said in the brief letter addressed to the President. Earlier, he congratulated the UPA-Left candidate Pratibha Patil on being elected President. “I accept my defeat with all humility,” the 84-year-old leader said in a statement. While expressing his gratitude to MPs and MLAs who voted for him, Mr. Shekhawat said he was also grateful to the people of “this great country for giving me their boundless love and affection during the whole process.” He said, “I wish to assure our countrymen that after relinquishing the office of Vice-President of India, I shall continue to work for the uplift of the poor and the deprived sections of society so that they may enjoy their fundamental right to live with dignity. I shall also continue to work for strengthening the unity and social harmony in the country.”
