Hyderabad: GHMC commissioner C.V.S.K. Sarma asked children to plant at least one seedling each to fight against environmental degradation and to control its ill effects. Planting of saplings is the only solution, he said. Dr. Sarma was taking part in the ‘Vanamahotsav’ programme organised by the urban forestry wing of the corporation along with Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Jubilee Hills, on Saturday. The programme started with students reciting ‘slokas’ on importance of trees and environment. Trees, unlike human beings, if planted and nurtured to maturity, would provide not only fruits but many other benefits. To make Hyderabad one of the best cities in the world, it was necessary to develop lot of greenery, Dr. Sarma said and asked children to keep their premises clean and green. Dr. Sarma released the school magazine Vidya Jyothi on the occasion. He also planted a neem tree. Earlier, school principal Rama Devi, in her welcome address said students in each section would adopt two plants and nurture them to maturity.
