CHENNAI: Congress volunteers, led by party’s north Chennai functionary Royapuram Mano, were detained by the police on Saturday, while staging a protest against removing the huts along the railway line at Tondiarpet.
Police said the members, including eight councillors, came to the place after the railway authorities began the eviction work with the help of local police.
Mr. Mano said the Government had already assured the local people that they would not be evicted before making alternative arrangements for them. However, the railway authorities, all of a sudden, started the work on Saturday, he charged.
All the detained protestors were later released.
