Bangalore: The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), in association with Lockheed Martin Corporation, the U.S. aviation company, has concluded the initial phases of the India Innovation Growth Programme. Four among the 14 technocrats, who were declared winners for their innovative ideas with commercial applications, were presented medals here on Friday. FICCI’s adviser Alop K. Mitttal said, “While we are emerging as a knowledge industry leader, we create fewer original products and technologies than we are capable. This programme was to encourage scientists and technocrats with feasible ideas, grow them into enterprises.” The IC 2 Institute, University of Texas, supported the programme by both providing faculty for the training sessions and in evaluating and short-listing finalists. Len Denton from the university, said, “We initially wanted to award medals to six of the best but the judges’ panel had to settle for 14 finalists, because there were so many original ideas with commercial potential. This programme will continue in the years ahead.” Ray O. Johnson, senior vice-president and chief technology officer of Lockheed Martin Corporation, said, “Similar programmes are going on in 74 other countries but India is emerging as a leader in the number of innovations that can eventually go into the global market.”
