Song and Drama wing holds meet on ‘iodised salt’ 10 troupes participated in the programme
Bangalore: What is the best way to educate people in the villages about the importance of iodine content in food? A folk medium that can spread the message, of course. Keeping this in mind, the Song and Drama division, Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Karnataka, organised a workshop on “Iodated salt” on Friday for folk art troupes to help them communicate to rural audience about the importance of iodated salt. Around 10 troupes from the State, including 75 artistes performing in the folk art mediums of veeragase, yakshagana, street play, theatre, karapalamela, leather puppetry and magic were selected to take part in the workshop. In a yakshagana performance, artistes showed how the demon of iodine deficiency ailments such as goitre can make a person sick and how consumption of iodised salt prevents the onset of such ailments. In the workshop, artistes prepared the programme packages in a particular format incorporating the themes provided to them by the experts. A.P. Frank Noronha, Chairman, Inter-Media Publicity Coordination Committee (Karnataka) and Deputy Director-General, Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity, inaugurated the workshop.
