New Mangalore Port on expansion mode

Special Correspondent

Records Rs. 280 crore income in 2006-07

BANGALORE: The New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) which recorded a total income of Rs. 280 crore in 2006-07, is on an expansion mode. Speaking to reporters after a meeting here on Saturday with traders, Port Trust Chairman, P. Tamilvanan, said “Under the National Maritime Development Programme, NMPT will spend Rs. 6,400 crore up to 2013 on expanding cargo handling facilities, with four additional deep berths for ships to be built. The private participation share is being worked out by consultants and work can start by mid-2008”.

Each new berth would cost around Rs crore and one would be for handling around 150 tonnes petroleum imports annually. Another new berth would be dedicated for coal imports by Nagarjuna Power Corporation, he said.

While there was a decline in ore exports from Kudremukh, the port handled a total of six lakh tonnes of ore last year, mostly from mines in the Bellary-Hospet belt. To meet this demand, separate facilities, including conveyor belts for ore pellets, were part of the expansion plans. Another would be separate terminal, costing Rs. 2.05 crore for cruise ships; last year 18 cruise liners visited the port.

“Container traffic grew by 79.3 per cent last year and we handled 17,290 units amounting to 2.65 lakh tonnes and in the first quarter of this year, container traffic has increased by 30 per cent. To handle additional containers, we have installed a ‘stacker’ costing Rs. 1.66 crore, capable of handling 45 tonnes at a time. The completion of the Mangalore-Hassan railway line has already doubled the cargo arriving by rail,” Mr. Tamilvanan said.
