Indian team for C’wealth championship

NEW DELHI: An experimental team, mainly comprising juniors, will spearhead India’s campaign in the Commonwealth boxing championship to be held in Liverpool, England, from July 23 to 28.

Flyweight pugilist Sunil, who won gold medal in the Junior International tournament in Poland in May, will be India’s best bet for the Commonwealth medal. Nanao Singh (48kg), M. Suresh and Santosh Singh, are the other prospects, according to the team coach, G. Manoharan. Having won the championship in 2005 , the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) this time decided to send juniors to give them international exposure.

The team: Nanao Singh (48kg), Sunil (51kg), Santosh Singh (54kg), M. Suresh (57kg), Rakesh Kalaskar (60kg), Dilbagh Singh (64kg), Suresh Kumar (69kg), Manjit Singh (75kg), Pramoj Kumar (81kg), Praveen Kumar (91kg), Baljit (plus 91kg). — Principal Correspondent
