Hari Krishna makes short work of Short

cHESS / Karthik stuns German GM; Abhijeet shares lead

NEW DELHI: P. Hari Krishna punished British GM Nigel Short for an early blunder and walked out an impressive winner in just 19 moves in the second round of the Montreal International chess tournament in Montreal on Friday.

The second successive victory made Hari the sole leader at two points. Three players, including Gata Kamsky of the U.S., are on 1.5 points.

In the Petroff game, Hari Krishna quickly pounced on a mistake by Short and threatened to gain a knight on the kingside. Short resigned immediately to signal the end of one of the shortest decisive games of his long career.

In Montreal, Sandipan Chanda and Abhijit Kunte recorded first-round victories in the Quebec Open.

At Balaguer, Spain, youngster Arun Karthik (four points) continued his dream run by upstaging German GM Arkadij Rotstein in the fifth round, while Abhijeet Gupta (4.5) shared the lead with four others following his fourth victory.

In Montreal (Quebec, first round): Jonathan Grant (Sco) lost to Sandipan Chanda; Abhijit Kunte bt Hugues Masse (Can).

At Balaguer (fifth round, involving Indians):
