Grand Slam, Alwarpet score outright wins

Chennai: Grand Slam, which leads the table with 18 points after three rounds, and Alwarpet scored outright victories in the TNCA first division league on Saturday.

Opener S. Anirudha – he now has 430 runs in five innings – missed his third hundred in successive matches by a run, while his teammate T. Kumaran followed his first innings 99 with a destructive spell of six for 24 that gave Aruna the lead over Parry’s. Pramod Das’s 106 was instrumental in IOB picking up five points against Eagles on day three.

Vijay takes lead

In the key match of the third round – Globe Trotters versus holder Vijay at the SRMC ground – Vijay secured a hard-earned lead over the visiting side. Vijay slumped from a comfortable 150 for three to a worrying 166 for seven before Sree Kumar Nair (71 not out, 177b, 6x4) and M.K. Sivakumar (76 not out, 175b, 10x4, 2x6) added 165 in an unbroken eighth-wicket stand in 55.4 overs. Grand Slam bundled out Young Stars for 189 at the ICL-Guru Nanak ground, winning by an innings and four runs. R. Sunil Kumar blitzed a 51 (31b, 5x6, 4x4) in a losing cause; for Grand Slam off-spinner S. Suresh Kumar claimed four for 65. At the IIT-Chemplast ground, Alwarpet bundled out Jolly Rovers for 195.
