Yesteryear actor dead

S.R. Ashok Kumar

CHENNAI: Yesteryear actor S. Jayalakshmi, who had acted with Thygaraja Bhagavathar in ‘Sivakavi’ (1943), died of old age at her residence in Besant Nagar on Saturday at 6 a.m. She was 87. Jayalakshmi acted as Seetha in ‘Seethakalyanam’ (1934), directed by V. Shantharam. In fact, her whole family acted in the film. Her father, Sundaram Iyer, played Dasarathar while her brother S. Rajam played Ramar. Another brother, veena exponent S. Balachandar, who later became a popular director-actor, also did a role in the movie. Jayalakshmi’s granddaughter is actor Jayashree, who played the female lead in movies ‘Thendraley Ennai Thodu’ and ‘Thirumathi Oru Vegumathy’.

Jayalakshmi is survived by her husband K. Swaminathan and three children.
