‘Education should be practice-oriented’

Staff Reporter

Coimbatore: Students should develop a strong set of life skills rather than just concentrate on learning from text books, Sudha Seshayan, Professor and Head, Department of Anatomy, Stanley Medical College, Chennai, said here recently.

Delivering the N.Mahalingam Endowment Lecture at the Avinashilingam University, she said that education now-a-days had been reduced to mere acquisition of degrees. It was far removed from practice. “Education should awaken the soul,” she said.

It was imperative that students developed physical, mental, spiritual and social health to form a strong personality and thereby feel a sense of self-worth.

The emotional and spiritual quotients were as important as the intelligence quotient, she added.

Ms.Seshayan said that women students should be aware of the fact that men and women were made of different emotional fabric and they reacted to situations differently. If people kept this in mind, bias based on gender could be brought down. T.K.Shanmughanandam, Chancellor, said that educating a woman was the only way towards economic, social and intellectual uplift of society.
