Rs. 45.55 lakh sanctioned for 24 drinking water schemes

15 gram panchayats identified as naxal-affected

Zilla panchayat president to visit the areas

CHIKMAGALUR: President of Chikmagalur Zilla Panchayat Belli Prakash has said that Rs. 1.76 crore was being spent for development projects in 15 gram panchayats in the naxal-affected areas of Koppa, Sringeri and Mudigere taluks.

Mr. Prakash told presspersons here on Saturday said that Rs. 1.45 crore would be spent for roads and bridges, including spillover works. Regretting that there was lack of progress in some areas owing to local problems, he said all works were being executed by the respective gram panchayats.

Stating that Rs. 45.55 lakh had been sanctioned for 24 drinking water schemes, Mr. Prakash said electrification was being taken up at a cost of Rs. 9.40 lakh. In addition to this, steps had been taken to repair anganwadi centres, build school open air theatres, construct new houses and repair old houses, he said.

Mr. Prakash said he would visit these gram panchayats along with the panchayat chief executive officer and department heads shortly and review the progress of projects being implemented. He would also make an assessment of new projects to be taken up in the area after holding discussions with the local people, he added.

Expressing satisfaction with the implementation of development projects in the areas under Maoist influence, he said Sringeri taluk had emerged first in the taluk-wise review of implementation of the projects.

Mr. Prakash said the area where the Maoists were active was steadily increasing. While 11 panchayats were identified as naxal-affected last year, the number had increased to 15 this year. He said the Government had sanctioned Rs. 3 crore for development projects in this area last year.
