Bonhomie: (From left) Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, senior BJP leader M. Venkaiah Naidu, BJP State unit president D. V. Sadananda Gowda, party leaders Yashwant Sinha and H.N. Ananth Kumar at the BJP State executive committee meeting in Bangalore on Sunday.
Bangalore: Sending out a strong political message, the BJP State unit on Sunday adopted an assertive posture on transfer of power to it by the Janata Dal (Secular). “Sharing of power for 20 months each is not a secret and personal understanding between Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa. It is a solemn agreement that must be honoured between the two political parties in the backdrop of the people’s mandate,” the former BJP president M. Venkaiah Naidu said at the inaugural session of the party’s State executive here. At the same time, Mr. Naidu, who played a key role in installing the Janata Dal (S)-BJP Government in the State, remarked that he was not a “doubting Thomas”. He expressed confidence that Mr. Yediyurappa would become Chief Minister on October 3. He asked party leaders to stop bothering about the deadline for transfer of power, but to see the issues beyond October 3, such as the party’s preparations for better governance. BJP vice-president Yashwant Sinha, who is in charge of Karnataka, too expressed total confidence that the transfer of power to the BJP would be smooth. He said, “we want power not for the sake of enjoying it, but for serving the people better. We will strive to make Karnataka number one in the country.” The leaders also stressed the importance of initiating steps to strengthen the party organisation. President of the State unit of the party D.V. Sadananda Gowda asked party leaders and Ministers to take active part in the programme. Mr. Sinha and Mr. Naidu cautioned party leaders against going to the press on the intra-party differences. Mr. Sadananda Gowda asked party leaders to be conscious of the party’s image and to desist from indulging in activities that would dent it. The State executive adopted a resolution seeking strict action against terrorists and naxalites, in particular against “professors and intellectuals” who nurtured the spirit of naxalism. It called for strengthening the police force, besides launching a scheme for the development of tribal people. The executive also asked the BJP Yuva Morcha to launch a week-long district and taluk-level campaign from August against naxalism.
