TIRUCHI: The Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) is all set to commence its work on establishing the proposed IT park at Navalpattu in Tiruchi district shortly; but the particular geographic location is already described as ‘IT Park’ in WikiMapia, an online map resource that combines Google Maps with a Wiki system. A veritable indication of things to come, a piece of related information incidentally provided by www.wikimapia.org would also warm the cockles of the public in Tiruchi and other central districts in the State. The Tiruchi airport has qualified for the description as ‘International Airport’. Though international flights are being operated to Colombo and destinations in countries in the Gulf for years now, the fact that the outright description as ‘International Airport’ has come at a time when the Airports Authority of India has approached the district administration for allotting land for expansion to prepare the ground for landing of bigger aircraft is not lost on the public. For IT majors, these two factors are more than enough to put Tiruchi in the forefront among the tier-II cities in the State in the context of establishing an IT Park, though inadequacy of good hotels, though not insurmountable in near future, remains a grey area. Nevertheless, there are indications that Tiruchi has qualified in the ‘scalability’ factor in the reckoning of the IT companies, particularly with regard to the foremost requirement of human resource. The overwhelming patronage for Bangalore bound buses and the train is enough indication. Kingfisher Airlines also operates a daily service in the Bangalore-Tiruchi sector. For the establishment of one million square foot built up space in the sprawling 135 acre site at Navalpattu the ELCOT is in the process of readying architectural design, said its Managing Director Uma Shankar. While the smaller companies would operate from the built-up area, the remaining land would be apportioned to bigger companies that seek to develop their own campuses. In the subsequent phase, the IT Park area would be expanded to the additional 100 acres that the ELCOT has sought in the vicinity of the existing site. The advantage for the IT companies would be their location in close proximity to the airport that is less than 10 kilometres away or just a 15-minute drive. Already, there is a 100-feet connecting road developed earlier by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board to a stretch of about five kilometres from Gundur along the Tiruchi-Pudukottai Highway to the IT Park area. Though in the nascent stage of planning, the stretch in all probability would be a part of the ambitious ring road project for Tiruchi city.
