Park to power: A TNEB sub-station will come up on this piece of land in Mudichur, on which a park was proposed earlier.

TAMBARAM: Land has been identified in Mudichur for the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board to establish a sub-station, a facility that is expected to help improve the power supply to many residential localities near Tambaram.

Mudichur Panchayat and St. Thomas Mount Panchayat Union have given their consent to part with the 80 cents of land, which was originally earmarked for a park, for the 33/11 kilo volt sub-station. With the permission, work to construct the much needed sub-station is expected to commence soon.

TNEB also has proposals to establish similar facilities in at least a dozen more places in the southern suburbs. The objective of the projects is to ensure uniform distribution of power supply to even remote corners, according to senior engineers of TNEB.

In Mudichur, the land identified for the sub-station was originally earmarked for a park. However as there were no development, it has been decided to hand it over to TNEB, said P.Damodaran, Mudichur Village Panchayat president.

TNEB engineers said though there were plans to install more such facilities in many places of Tambaram Taluk, non-availability of land and government formalities came in the way.

Members of the Chitlapakkam Residents’ Welfare Associations Coordination Committee said low voltage and erratic supply has been causing severe hardship to a few thousand families coming under the Nehru Nagar sub-division of TNEB in their area. Last month, the residents mobbed the sub-division’s office to protest frequent power disruptions.

Office-bearers of the association said provision of a sub-station was the only solution to power problems in Chitlapakkam area.

On most days, power supply oscillated around 170 volts, instead of 230 volts, forcing children to study in insufficient lighting.

While admitting that such a problem existed TNEB engineers said non-availability of land came in the way of setting up more sub-stations.

A clash of interests between different political parties over the land for the proposed site is the root cause for the delay in setting up this crucial facility, activists said.

A few months ago, members of AIADMK walked out of a meeting of the council of St. Thomas Mount Panchayat Union over location of land for the sub-station.
