Chennai college, CII plan machine vision centre

Aim to promote joint research involving students, industry and technical partners

CHENNAI: Rajalakshmi Engineering College (REC) in association the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is planning to set up ‘Machine Vision’ Centre of Excellence on its campus and introduce post-graduate courses in Advanced Manufacturing and Machine Vision and Digital Manufacturing.

Speaking at a seminar on ‘Machine Vision – a road map’, organised by CII & REC, here on Thursday, REC principal K Sarukesi said REC is one among the five educational institutions short-listed by the Department of Science and Technology to start Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council – Centre of Excellence and Relevance (TIFAC-CORE) and identify industry partners in setting up of the proposed centre.

“The Machine Vision Centre is aimed at promoting joint research to find innovative solutions to practical problems in any field by involving students, industry and technical partners. These partners have agreed to help us by providing field expertise, machinery and finance. It is guesstimated that every year there will be a need for thousands of engineers in machine vision in South India in the next 10 years.” As industry partners, Super Auto Forge, Nanchil Conductors and Kensium Solutions came forward to give Rs. 1 crore for the Centre that would cost Rs 4.5 crore. The Centre would provide financial assistance of Rs 1.25 crore and REC was investing Rs 2.20 crore. The Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Ashok Leyland, WS Industries, Technical Stampings Automotive and MTAB Engineers might join REC as technical partners.

K Jayaramakrishnan, Co-Convener, Education & Industry Institute Interaction Panel, CII Tamil Nadu and Vice- President of TCS, said that the CII would help REC identify potential technical and financial partners from its member industry in establishing the Centre.
