LUCKNOW: Shiv Kumar alias Dadua, often referred to as “Veerapan of North India,” was gunned down by the Special Task Force (STF) of Uttar Pradesh Police in Ahleua jungles near Jhalmal hamlet in Chitrakoot district on Sunday. The brigand, wanted in about 50 cases of looting, dacoity, murder, and kidnapping for ransom carried a reward of Rs. 5 lakh on his head. Dadua was gunned down along with five of his accomplices. The 22-member STF team was led by the Senior Superintendent of Police Amitabh Yash. The STF had stepped up the “Operation Dadua” shortly after the Mayawati Government came to power . Director-General of Police Vikram Singh told a news conference here that Dadua was recognised by the gram pradhan of Jhalmal hamlet and the villagers. Mr. Singh said his body would be preserved for two days for people from the neighbouring villages to identify him and that his relatives had been informed. An American Service Rifle, AK-47 cartridges, two live grenades, mobile phones and chargers, and water proof tents, especially designed to camouflage them in the jungles, were recovered.
