Teachers want ‘meaningful’ cluster meets

Staff Reporter

Union says these are held without adequate preparation.

KOZHIKODE: The State Committee of the Kerala Higher Secondary Teachers Union (KHSTU) has asked the Government to ensure that the school cluster meetings are made more meaningful with a view to benefit the students.

A meeting of the union held here on Monday criticised the State Government for the casual manner in which these meetings were being conducted.

“The Government holds these meetings without the requisite preparation and seriousness. The last higher secondary cluster meeting was held in the backdrop of rain havoc. It delayed admission process when a number of school working days had already been lost,” the union alleged at the meeting.

There was also a need to bring down the number of cluster meetings and they should not result in further loss to school days.

Delay in book supply

The KHSTU State committee also mentioned the delay in the supply of textbooks. The first term of the new academic year is about to end and books are yet to reach many students. The delay, it was alleged, was reportedly due to intervention of private publishers.

The committee wondered on which textbooks the students ought to rely when SCERT textbooks were available only for 13 subjects. It wanted the department directorate to come out with a clear directive on the issue.

Travel allowance

The union also appealed to the authorities to provide orientation to teachers who visited schools as part of the monitoring initiative.

The teachers ought to also be paid travel allowance to participate in the cluster meetings.

The meeting flayed the action of the authorities in arresting teachers who had boycotted cluster meeting on legitimate grounds. C.H. Moosa, KHSTU State president presided over the meeting.
