NEW DELHI: Declaring India’s biggest science fair, “Initiative for Research and Innovation in Science (IRIS)-2007”, open here on Monday, Union Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal urged students across the country to apply their theoretical knowledge to experiment and design innovations that could benefit humankind.

Aimed at promoting inventions and innovations among school children by encouraging a spirit of discovery in education, the fair is a collaborative effort by Intel, the Central Department of Science and Technology and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

The Minister also awarded six national IRIS winners for their thought-provoking innovations developed as projects for participation. The winners -- Rishin Behl, Vaishnavi Vishwanathan, Tanay David Delima, Nikhil Khosla, Sarvesh Nevatia and Rehan Netarwla, who hail from different parts of the country -- spoke about their ideas and experiences in developing their innovative projects and participating in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. Competing with more than 1,500 students from over 45 countries, the Indian contingent comprising national IRIS winners had bagged eight awards among 14 scientific project categories at the international fair.

IRIS-2007, which will culminate in December 2007 with the announcement of national as well as subject category and special category winners, is now inviting entries in 10 scientific categories from students in schools across the country. IRIS caters to young Indian innovators and provides them a platform at international events including the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair and the International Exhibition for Young Innovators.
