BANGALORE: Veteran journalist Shree Padre was honoured with the ‘Mentor Award for Encouragement to Development Journalism’, in appreciation of his role in promoting development journalism, here on Monday. Instituted by the Charkha Development Communication Network, a project of Communication for Development and Learning, the award was given away by Governor T.N. Chaturvedi. The Charkha Awards for Excellence in Development Journalism 2006 were awarded to Ravindra Bhat of Prajavani and Rajashekhara Joginmane of Udayavani. In his acceptance speech, Mr. Padre said that development issues were taking a back seat in today’s journalism. “Ground realities are not reflected in newspapers even as technology has increased manifold their capacity to make a difference to society,” he said. Urging newspaper houses to introspect on this subject, Mr. Padre said that newspapers could become a rallying point to discuss and encourage socially relevant issues. Book released
Mr. Chaturvedi also released a book titled ‘Waternama’, a compilation of traditional water harvesting measures in Karnataka.
