More body parts of babies discovered

Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR: Orissa police on Monday discovered body parts of several more stillborn and newborn babies while digging out a pit used for dumping of medical waste in Nayagarh district.

About 132 polythene bags containing medical wastage and body parts of babies were retrieved from the pit near Nabaghanpur village, three km. from the district headquarter town of Nayagarh on Sunday. Discovery of fresh body parts indicated that the number of dead foetuses could be more, police sources said. On Sunday, about 25 dead foetuses were said to have been recovered from the pit. “We have dug the pit and recovered small bones and other body parts that had mixed with the soil. We will be sending those for forensic tests to Bhubaneswar,” Nayagarh Superintendent of Police Rajesh Kumar said.

Police had taken two persons into the custody and detained one in this connection. The district police also conducted raids on six nursing homes having ultrasound facilities and was examining their waste dumping sites.
