This Day That Age
The three-day conference of Central and State Government representatives, convened to consider the enforcement of the metric system of weights and measures, concluded in New Delhi on July 22, after adopting a number of agreed decisions. It was unanimously decided that the enforcement of weights and measures should be transferred from the State List to the Concurrent List, and for that purpose the Constitution should be amended. The programmes of the different States for the first stage of changeover to the metric system should be finalised by the end of October this year. All States, except Mysore and Uttar Pradesh, are of the view that the system should be introduced over the entire territory, but in specified fields. Mysore and UP are in favour of introducing the system in a limited area and extending it progressively to other parts. It was agreed that the method of phasing the programme should be left to the individual State Government. A representative of the Centre will, however, visit the States shortly to ensure that the programmes are ready by the end of October.
