dated July 24, 1957 : Overcrowding in trains

Replying to the debate on the Railway budget in the Lok Sabha on July 22, the Railway Minister, Mr. Jagjivan Ram, referred to the issue of overcrowding in trains and said that he was thinking whether the accommodation for short-distance passengers could be limited to standing accommodation, so that overcrowding might be reduced. In some countries, only standing accommodation was provided in suburban railways where passengers had to travel for only 15 to 20 minutes. A few seats were provided for women and old persons. He did not know how far this measure would be popular in this country, but he would get the proposal examined by experts.
