They will be in addition to existing 3,200 hostels Work on building 200 hostels is in progress
Bangalore: The Government will establish 360 hostels for Schedule Caste, Schedule Tribe and Other Backward Class students this year in addition to the existing 3,200 such hostels across the State, Minister for Social Welfare Balachandra L. Jarkiholi has said. Replying to G.K. Patil in the Legislative Council on Monday, Mr. Jarkiholi said work on 200 hostels was in progress. The department was awaiting the release of grants to construct another 160 hostels. Of the existing hostels, only 2,000 had their own buildings. The rest were functioning from rented buildings. To a question from N. Manjunath, who sought details on atrocities committed against Dalits in 2006 and 2007, Mr. Jarkiholi said he would reply in a fortnight as the Government had to gather and collate information form police stations in all the taluks. V.R. Sudarshan and V.S. Ugrappa said the Minister’s reply reflected the Government’s concern for Dalits. When Chairman B.K. Chandrashekar intervened to seek a clarification from the Minster, Mr. Jarkiholi said, “Sir, I wanted to seek even more time to provide a proper reply. But I did not, as you have already instructed me not to give vague replies.”
