KOLKATA: In what is being construed as a major development in school education, the State Government has threatened to discontinue grants to State-aided schools found to be accepting “donations in the name of development and annual charges”. It is also considering legislation aimed at banning the practice in private schools across the State. The number of State-aided schools is nearly 9,000, the State’s School Education Minister, Partha Dey, told The Hindu here on Monday. “Accepting such unofficial donations in schools which are debarred from even collecting tuition fees from students is not just illegal but inhuman,” Mr. Dey said. The institutions guilty of doing so are mostly located in urban areas, he added. “We are also contemplating legislation which will cover all categories of schools including private ones. A draft of the legislation has been sent to various managements of schools for their opinion and consultations are on regarding the matter with the Ministry of Human Resources,” Mr. Dey said.
