“Government must follow rules”

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: The former Chief Minister and lawyer Siddhartha Shankar Ray appeared before a division bench of the Calcutta High Court here on Monday on behalf of a petitioner challenging the acquisition of land by the West Bengal Government for the Tata Motors car manufacturing project at Singur.

The State Government was represented by Advocate-General Balai Roy and Government Pleader Sobhanlal Hazra, among others.

Mr. Ray submitted before the bench, comprising Chief Justice S.S. Nijjar and Justice P.C. Ghose, that the law had been circumvented and evaded by the Government.

“We are not against the State Government trying to set up industries in the State but only want it to follow the law and the rules,” he pointed out.
