LTTE is targeting south now: Colombo

B. Muralidhar Reddy

COLOMBO: The Sri Lankan Government on Monday warned that the LTTE, following its ouster from the east, the LTTE is “attempting to cause destruction and panic” in south with the objective of disrupting “development works” in the east and urged people to be vigilant.

The alert came amid continued fighting in the north and killings of a foreign NGO local worker in Jaffna and four Tiger cadres at the Muhamalai Forward Defence Lines (FDLs).

Economic targets

The Government said the LTTE leaders recently had warned that they would target “economic institutions and places where crowds of innocent people gather” to create unrest. Citing intelligence reports, the warning claimed that two trucks packed with explosives had been sent to Colombo.

Security programme

It said the Government had a well coordinated security programme for Colombo to prevent the LTTE resorting to the “indiscriminate use of bombs and claymore mines on unsuspecting innocent civilians”.

It said some measures may be “disturbing” civilian life.

Separately, the Defence Ministry said suspected LTTE gunmen shot dead an aid worker of the “Danish Refugee Council”, an NGO, at the Kakathivu junction area in Jaffna.

The non-government agency was dedicated to facilitating access to water supplies and sanitation facilities to displaced persons.
