NEW DELHI: P. Hari Krishna took a quick 15-move draw from USA’s Gata Kamsky in the third round of the Montreal International chess tournament in Montreal on Sunday. After Hari’s peaceful outing that followed the Slav Defence, Sergei Tiviakov joined him in the lead at 2.5 points. Tiviakov handed out GM Nigel Short an unprecedented third straight defeat in tournament play. In the Quebec Open, also in Montreal, Sandipan Chanda and Abhijit Kunte reached 2.5 points each from three rounds. On Sunday, Chanda defeated Canada’s Jean Herbert in 29 moves before Kunte battled to a 78-move draw against Russian GM Anton Shomoev. Chanda and Kunte are among the five players who are half a point behind Russia’s Andrey Rychagov, the leader at three points. In the Balaguer International Open at Balaguer, Spain, Abhijeet Gupta remained in the joint second spot after a 72-move draw with black pieces against second seeded Bulgarian GM Aleksander Delchev in the seventh round. Soumya Swaminathan surrendered to German GM Thomas Luther but stayed on course for her Woman International Master title-norm. Arun Karthik (4.5 point) also kept alive his chances of an International Master norm by drawing the Brazilian IM Herman van Riemsdijk. The results: Montreal International (third round): P. Balaguer Open (seventh round, involving Indians): Aleksander Delchev (Bul, 5.5) drew with Abhijeet Gupta (5.5); Thomas Luther (Ger, 5) bt Soumya Swaminathan (4.5); Herman van Riemsdijk (Bra, 4.5) drew with R. Arun Karthik (4.5); Jose R amon Perez (Esp, 4) lost to B.
