TIRUCHI: Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FICCI) has set its foot in Tamil Nadu to train farmers on European Good Agricultural Practices (EurepGAP). To start with, the mango and banana cultivators in Tiruchi district would be enrolled for producing mangoes and bananas for Europe and the US, FICCI Quality Forum Technical Director E. N. Sundar said. The enrolment fee would be Rs.10,000, but if horticulturists floated groups, it would be Rs.5,000 per farmer. Talking to the media on the sidelines of a day-long seminar on ‘EurepGAP standards for mangoes’, organised jointly by the FICCI and the Directorate of Marketing and Agri Business here on Monday, he said that though farmers cultivated quality fibre-free mango varieties including the ‘Imampasanthu,’ and a wide range of bananas, their earnings were inadequate. Young graduates from the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University would be posted at each farm to guide the farmers on cultivation practices, fair utilisation of irrigation water and crop protection methods as per EurepGAP norms. The FICCI would also co-ordinate with the National Research Centre for Banana. Mr. Sundar said that the EurepGAP concept would have a multiplying effect in export of horticultural crops in Tiruchi. Earlier, inaugurating the seminar, Tiruchi Collector Ashish Vachhani assured all assistance to the farmers.
