Drop stir, municipal workers told

Special Correspondent

Municipal workers have been on strike since July 14

The employees have placed five demands before Government

Bangalore: The State Government on Monday appealed to the municipal workers to drop their agitation and come for discussions on Tuesday. The municipal workers have been on strike since July 14.

Making a statement in this regard in the Legislative Council, Municipal Administration Minister R. Srinivas said the Government would think of taking stern action against the striking employees depending upon the outcome of the Tuesday’s meeting.

Arrests in Hassan

He said so far the Government had not initiated any action against the striking employees because of humanitarian consideration. However, some employees had been arrested in Hassan for damaging the drinking water supply pipes.

Instruction to DCs

The Minister said the Government had also instructed the deputy commissioners of all districts to make alternative arrangements to ensure that civic services such as drinking water supply and garbage clearance were not affected. The striking employees had placed a charter of five important demands before the Government.

The Government had implemented all the demands, barring the one on regularisation of services of all daily wage workers.

The Minister noted that the Government had an open mind on regularisation of services.

But such a major decision could not be taken overnight as it involved several legal procedures.

Pointing out that the Supreme Court had stipulated certain conditions for regularisation of services, the Minister said the State Government would try to regularise the services of “eligible” employees.
